Marvin Ridge will be looking for a new girls head coach for the 2020-21 season. Jamie Ellis was relieved of her position as girls head coach after finishing 11-13 this past season. Ellis, a former Maverick player took over as Mavs head coach in the 2016-17 season replacing Marshall Smith. The Mavericks advanced to the the state playoffs in four of Ellis's five years but never advanced past the 1st round. Ellis leaves the program with a 48-49 record, 24-27 in the SCC.

Weddington’s Owen Van Gundy will continue his education and basketball career at Sewanee. Van Gundy, 5’10 guard finished his senior with the Warriors by being named 3rd Team All-UCHOOPS, All-SCC while averaging 8.8 ppg along with 2.7 apg and 2.1 spg. As a senior captain for the Warriors scored a career high 23 points and career high 6 assists in a 92-86 loss to Cox Mill. Sewanee was 12-14 last season and will graduate five seniors from the 2019-2020 team. Congrats Owen, we will be watching you at Sewanee!

Piedmont rising junior foward Cade Tyson has transfered out of Union Co. for the 2020-21 season. A 6'5 wing, Tyson led Union Co. scoring (22.8 ppg) adn was 5th in rebounding (8.3 rpg) while being named 1st Team All-UCHOOPs and All-SCC as a sophomore. Cade was named 3rd Team All-UCHOOPS, All-Newcomer Team and ALl-SCC as a freshman. Tyson scored a career high 42 points in a win over Marvin Ridge. Cades older brother Hunter is a rising junior at Clemson and is Union Co's second all-time leading scorer with 2131 points.

The Cuthbertson Cavaliers didn't have to look very far to fill the position of boys head basketball coach. The Cavaliers tapped Chris Caputi to lead the program. Caputi takes over for Mike Helms after serving as his assistant this past season. Caputi spoke via email, "I am blessed to have met and worked closely with some of the best high school and college coaches in the area and can't wait to get to work as the basketball coach of Cuthbertson High School. The level of support from the school admin, faculty, staff and student body of this community is incredible, and I am looking forward to the future with this talented group of young men."

Caputi, a New York native, moved to North Carolina six years ago to join the coaching staff at Division II Queens University of Charlotte where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons and worked closely with player development and opponent scouting from 2014 - 2016. In 2016 Caputi became a teacher and assistant coach under Mike Carft at Ardrey Kell High School from 2016 - 2018, before taking a head coaching job at North Forsyth High School for the 2018 - 2019 school year. Caputi moved back to the charlotte area and joined the Cuthbertson Cavaliers as a Physical Education teacher and assistant basketball coach for the current school year, 2019-2020.

For the first time in the school's history the Cuthbertson Cavaliers will need to look for a boys varsity basketball. Mike Helms has stepped down from the position. Helms, who is a veteran of Union Co. basketball became the Cavaliers first boys basketball coach when the school opened their doors in the fall of 2009. Helms led the Cavaliers to back-to-back state title game appearances during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Helms leave Cuthbertson with a 177-122 career record and some pretty big shoes to fill.

On a side note, when I started UnionCountyHoops.com and broadcasting games back in 2007 the one coach that supported the idea 100%, opened his office, his gym and his basketball mind was Mike Helms. I want to say thank you Coach Helms, it's been a real pleasure.

Cuthbertson’s Lilly Anderson finishes her Cavalier career in the top 10 all-time in Union Co. history. Anderson, a four-year starter for Coach Joel Allen ends her great career as the 8th All time rebounder with 934 boards just behind Marvin Ridges Jordan Henry. Anderson also finishes 8th in All-time in blocks with 201 just behind Forest Hills great Jennifer Hailey in Union Co. history. Anderson also finishes her career with 1052 points and 215 steals. Union Academy’s Derek Young finishes his career as Union Co.’s all-time leader in blocked shots. Young, a future Wingate football player finished his four-year career with 200 career blocked shots. Young moved past Weddington’s Brandon Watts (193 blocks) to take sole possession of the record after blocking 4 shots in the 84-68 loss to Lincoln Charter in the state playoffs. Young also ends this career with 1567 points, good for 9th place all-time in Union Co. history just in front of Forest Hills Jai Rori. Young also finished with 877 rebounds good for 3rd all-time in Union Co. history just ahead of Forest Hills Nas Tyson. Congrats Derek it’s been a pleasure watching you play!

Some of Union Co.'s best basketball players were selected for the 2019-20 All-District teams. Weddington's Chase Lowe was name to the All-District first team. Piedmont's Cade Tyson and Forest Hills' Jalen Huntley were named to the All-District 2nd Team. The All-District Third team welcomed Forest Hills Alec Topper, Union Academy's Derek Young, Monroe's Salen Streater and Porter Ridge's Marcus Willis.

There Union Co. girls were represented as well. Cuthbertson's Maddie Dillinger was named to the All-District 2nd Team. Union Academy's Karynont Clark was named to the All-District 3rd Team. Congrats to everyone!

Weddington's senior guard Karrah Katzbach is not the 4th all-time leading scorer in Weddington school history. Heading into the 1st round of the SCC tournament game vs. Piedmont needeing 7 points to move past Weddington great Erin Addison (1303 points) into sole possession of 4th place in Weddington history with 1323 career points. Karrah scored 26 points and helped the Warriors advance to the SCC Tournament semi-finals on Wednesday vs. Charlotte Catholic. Weddington's all-time scorer is Stephanie Watts, who happens to be Union Co.'s all-time leading scorer with 2566 points. Jordan Alley is next with 1587 points followed by Allie Cashion with 1458 points. Katzbach finished the game with 26 poiints and the win. Congrats Karrah!!!

Cuthbertson senior forward Lillian Anderson is now the all-time leading rebounder in Cuthbertson school history. Anderson needed just 6 rebounds to grab the record from Morgan Carlson. Carlson grabbed 880 career rebounds while at Cuthbertson from 2010-2014. Anderson grabbed 12 rebounds in the 59-50 win over rival Weddington. Anderson now ranks 8th all-time in career rebounds in Union Co. history. Parkwood great Emry Tsitouris is Union Co.'s all-time leading rebounder with 1361. Cuthbertson senior wing Lauryn Hardiman is the newest member of the 1000 point club. Hardiman joins the 1000-pt Club in the 52-37 win over Parkwood. Hardiman is the second Cavalier to join the 1000-pt club after teammate Maddie Dillinger earlier this season. Cuthbertson's all-time leading scorer Taylor Helms with 1570 career points. The win gives the Cavaliers a 21-2 record and 12-1 in the SCC. Congrats Lauryn!!

Monroe's sophomore Shaleak Knotts joing the Union Co. record book after grabbing 21 rebounds in the 64-45 win over Cuthbertson. Knotts' 21 rebounds ties him for 2nd place all-time in Union Co. history with Piedmont's Hunter Tyson, Cameron Tripp and Forest Hills' Mark Clyburn. The Union Co. reocrd for rebounds in a game is 22 by Weddington's Parker Farfour ('07-'08). Knotts set the Monroe record with his 21st rebound passing Monroe great Issac Blakeney, who grabbed 20 rebounds back in 2009-10 season. Congrats Shaleak!!!

Sun Valley's Keith Mason notched his 200th career win after the 65-45 win over Parkwood. Mason took over the Sun Valley mens program in 2007 after coming from East Meck. Congrats Coach Mason!!

Cuthbertson junior forward Maddie Dillinger is the newest member of the 1000 point club. Dillinger joing the 1K Club in the 80-35 win over Monroe earlier this week. Dillinger joins Cuthbertson's all-time leading scorer Taylor Helms, Morgan Carlson as the only Cavs in the elite club. Dillinger needed 20 points to hit the mark and finished with 22 poiints in the game. With the win the Cavaliers improve to 14-1 and 5-0 in the SCC. Congrats Maddie!!

Union Academy's Savanna Brooks joins the 1000 point club in the 72-5 win over Carolina International School. Brooks needed 20 points to hit the mark and finished with 22 poiints in the game. Brooks joins Union former Academy teammates Makayla Smith (1359 pts), Brianna Pressley (1259 pts) in the 1000-point club. Congrats Savanna!!

Union Academy's Jalen Anderson is the newest member of the 1000 point club. Anderson joined the elite class after a 21-point output in the 71-42 win over rival CATA. Anderson joins teammate Derek Young (1197) and his brother Johnny Andreson as the only 3 Union Acadmey Cardinals in the 1000-point club. Congrats Jalen!!

Piedmont's Cade Tyson joins his brother Hunter Tyson in the Union Co. record book after scoring 42 points in the win over Marvin Ridge. Tyson dropped a Career High 42 pts and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win over the Mavericks. The Union Co. record is 45 points in a game by Sun Valley's Shaun Stewart. Congrats Cade!!!

Monroe's outstanding senior guard Salen Streater joined the 1000 point club in his 1st game of his senior year, a 58-46 win over Porter Ridge. Streater entered his senior season with 994 career points. Salen finished the game with 18 points and the newest member of the 1000 point club. Streater joins Monroe greats Brandon Roddy(1603), Jamison Crowder (1453) & Issac Blakeney (1027) in the 1000-point clube. Congrats Salen!!!

Union Academy's MaKayla Smith will continue her education and basketball career at Lees-McRae college this fall. Smith, the 2018-19 UCHOOPS Player of the Year signed her letter of intent at Union Academy with friends, family and teammates surrounding her. Ms. Smith finished the 2018-19 season leading Union Co. in scoring with a 19.6 ppg average and also led Union Co. in assists with a 5.1 per game average. Smith also grabbed 5.8 rebounds per game and had 4.9 steals per game. MaKayla joined the 1000 point club this season while being named 1st Team All-UnionCountyHoops, All-PAC7 along with being named 2018-19 PAC7 Player of the Year and was named 2nd team All-District. MaKayla was named UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Week for week 10. Ms. Smith helped lead the Union Academy Cardinals to a 27-3 record and to the NC 1A Elite-8. Congrats MaKayla!

Parkwood's Addison will continue her education and basketball career at Montreat College. Laney, a 4-year starter at Pakwood first announced her future plans via Twitter, "I am SUPER blessed and excited to say i’ve received an offer from Montreat College!! #GoCavs 🏀🙌 " and put pen to paper at Parkwood High School in front of friends, family and teammates. Laney, despite being hobbled by injures her senior year averaged 7.1ppg, 5.6 rpg and 1 bpg for the Rebels. Laney was named 3rd Team All-UCHOOPs and All-SCC as a junior after averaging 10.0 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Laney was named UCHOOPS Special Mention after her Sophomore year after posting 5.7 ppg adn 6.8 rpg alogn with 1.0 bpg. Congrats Coach Addison!

For the first time in the history of the school the Porter Ridge women’s basketball program will have a new coach. Ina Thompson stepped down as the only coach the program has known in early May. Thompson won 217 games at Porter Ridge. Angela James has been tapped to take over the Pirate program that has not had a winning record since going 13-12 in 2015-16 season. James was previously the girls’ basketball head coach at Central Academy of Technology and Arts the past two seasons going 5-44 and before that was at the head coach at Union Academy for six seasons. Congrats Coach James!

Piedmont has tapped Anthony George to replace Kasey Brooks, who stepped down in April as the Piedmont's girls varsity basketball coach. George previously was an assistant coach for Mike Helms at Cuthbertson for seven years. George is also the Academy Director and Chief Operating Officer of Carolina Courts. The Panthers have a good core to build around in 2019 with forward Olivia Jordan, point guard Ashley Caraway and shooting guard Brook Atwell. The future looks bright in Unionville. Kasey Brooks has stepped down from her posistion as Piedmont's girls varsity basketball coach. Brooks stated the impact on her family as the reason for her stepping down. Brooks took over for Phil Apple in 2017-18. In two years at the helm of the Panthers, Brooks went 24-26 and made the 3A state playoffs in 2017-18. The Panthers have a good core to build around in 2019 with forward Olivia Jordan, point guard Ashley Caraway and shooting guard Brook Atwell. Thank you Coach Brooks!

Tyson needed just six points heading into the conference game with C.A.T.A which turned into a Yellow Jacket 117-23 win. Tyson scored the six points needed along with 14 more to finish with 20 points for the game and currently 2014 career points. Union Academy's outstanding junior forward Derek Young joined the 1000 point club in the 82-57 win over Langtree Charter Acaemy. Young scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in leading the Cardinals to the win. Young currently leads Union Co. in rebounding with a 9.1 rpg average and is 6th in scoring with a 15.1 ppg average. The Cardinals are 13-4 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-7. Young was named 1st team All-UCHOOPS as a sophmore. Congrats Derek!!!

Union Academy's MaKayla Smith scored her 1000 career point their the 52-36 win over Mountain Island Charter. Smith scored 27 points in leading the Cardinals to the win. MaKayla spent her 1st 2 years at Hickory Grove where she scord 426 points. Smith is averaging 16.8 ppg this season along with 6.0 rpg and 5.4 spg for the 14-1 Cardinals. Congrats MaKayla!!!

Katzbach's 38 points ties her with Weddington's Stephanie Watts for the 8th highest all time for points in a game. Watts, holds the Union Co. record with 50 points in a game back during the 2012-13 season. Karrah's 38 points ranks her 4th all-time in Weddington school history for points in a game, Watts owns the top 3 spots. Katzbach hit 5-3 pointers and added 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 steals in the win. Congrats Karrah!!!!

Piedmont's senior forward Alex Helms is headed to Coker College to continue her education and basketball career. Helms' announced it via twitter, "Joined the Cobra family today and could not be more excited! Thank you to everyone who supported me 🐍💙💛 @Coker_WBB." Helms led Union Co. in blocks as a junior with 2.8 blocks per game for the Panthers. Alex currently leads Union Co. in blocks with 4.0 a game. Good Luck Alex!!!!

Parkwood will keep the position with in the McGee family with the announcement of new Head Boys Basketball coach Rashad McGee. The Rebels AD Nelson Garner announced it via UCPSathletics.com. “Coach McGee is no stranger to the Parkwood basketball program as he replaces his brother and longtime coach Jamal McGee. The younger McGee is a 2001 graduate of Parkwood and has been an assistant for the varsity team at Parkwood for the last 4 years while also coaching the Parkwood middle school team. Coach McGee attended Winston Salem State University where he was a 2 years starter for the basketball team.” Jamal McGee coached both boys and girls varsity basketball at Parkwood. McGee was the girl’s coach for three seasons 2007-08 thru 2009-2010. McGee moved to the boy’s head coach position from 2010-12 & 2014-18 with a 2-year stop as an assistant at Olympic HS during the 2012-2014 seasons. McGee lead the Rebels to a 12-12 record and won the Rocky River conference with a 9-1 record in 2014-15. Porter Ridge’s boys’ varsity basketball coach is Garrett Malone. Former boys’ basketball coach Greg Wenger has stepped down. Wenger took over for Jim Rhodes following the 2015-16 season. Wenger compiled a 19-28 overall record in his two years leading Porter Ridge. Malone was an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Forest Hills to HC Matt Sides for seven years including one year as Sides' assistant at Anson Co. Forest Hills won the 2A State Title for the 2017-18 season. The Pirates will return 6’7 senior forward Cameron Stitt (14.1 ppg/6.2 rpg) and 6’4 senior forward Josh Massey (10.8 ppg) for the 2018-19 season. Stitt was named 2nd team All-UCHOOPS and Massey was name UCHOOPS Honorable Mention as juniors. Good Luck Coach!!!!

Union Academy has a new boys basketball coach. Assistant coach Barney Harris has been named the new boys varsity basketball coach replacing Brandon Rains. Rains spent two years leading the Cardinals and compiled a 32-22 record and advanced to the 2nd round of the state playoffs in 2017-18. The Cardinals return juniorforward Derek Young (14.4 ppg/8.0 rpg), Junior Jalen Anderson (14.0 ppg) and senior Cameron Phronebarger (11.8 ppg). Good luck Coach!

Central Academy has a new boys basketball coach. The Cougars name Sam Smithson as the new new boys varsity basketball coach replacing David Daniels. Daniels spent three years at the helm, compiling a 4-70 record. The Cougars return their second leading scorer from last season wtih senior guard Wyatt Brown (5.2 ppg). Good luck Coach!

Union Academy’s all time leading scorer Brianna Pressley will continue her education and basketball career at Wingate. Pressley was named 1st Team All-UCHOOPS as a senior as well as PAC-7 Player of the year and was named 3rd Team All-District as a senior. Briana led Union Co. in scoring as a junior with a 17.6 ppg and was 4th in Union Co. scoring with a 16.9 ppg as a senior. Briana helped lead the Union Academy Cardinals to a 24-3 record and to the 2nd round of the state 1A playoffs. Pressley joined the 1000-point club this season and finished her outstanding 4-year career at Union Academy with 1259 points. Pressley joins former Union Co. standouts Tayler Helms (Cuthbertson) and Zasha Barrett (Monroe) as member of the Wingate Bulldogs. Good Luck Briana!!

The Parkwood Rebels have named Jesse Boyce as the varsity girls head basketball coach. In a press release from Parkwood athletic director Nelson Garner, "Parkwood High School is pleased to name Jesse Boyce as its new head girls’ basketball coach. Coach Boyce is a 2005 graduate of Parkwood where he was a 3 sport athlete. In addition to teaching physical education he has served as the teams JV girls coach for the last 4 seasons compiling a record of 57-7. He has also spent time as a football and track coach for the Rebels. “We are excited about promoting coach Boyce from JV coach to head varsity coach” said Parkwood Athletic Director Nelson Garner. “As a Parkwood graduate he understands fully the tradition we have in our girls program and has demonstrated a passion and commitment for continuing that tradition for years to come”

2016-17 UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year and Sun Valley's all-time leading scorer Amanda Cherry has verbally commited to Coker College. Cherry announced it via her twitter account, "beyond blessed to announce that I have just verbally committed to play basketball at Coker College". Cherry wrapped up her steller 4-year career at Sun Valley leading Union Co. in scoring with a 18.9 ppg average. Amanda also averaged 3.3 rpg along with 2.6 apg and 2.5 spg in leading the Sun Valley Spartans to the SCC Tournament title and into the 3A state playoffs. Cherry was named 1st team All-UCHOOPS as a sophomore, junior and senior and 2nd team all-district as a senior. Amanda finishes her career in Union Co. as the 10th all-time leading scorer with 1694 points, 3rd in all-time assists with 433 and 9th all-time in steals with 250. Congratulations Amanda and good luck!

UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year Molly Setliff will headed to Lenoir Rhyne and continuing her basketball career. Former Parkwood coach Brian Morris stated, "Molly selected Lenoir Rhyne over Gardner Webb, App. State and Belmont Abby any many others. She loves the great competition in the S.A.C and the energetic coaching staff at Lenoir Rhyne."

Molly finished the 2017-18 season 3rd in Union Co. in scoring with a 17.2 ppg average and also led Union Co. in steals with a 4.7 per game average. Setliff also grapped 5.5 rebounds per game and had 3.2 assists per game. Molly was named 1st team All-UCHOOPS as a senior adn scored a season high 33 points in a 73-69 win over Piedmont and had 11 steals in a 58-39 win over Monroe. Molly joined the 1000 point club as a senior finishing her outstanding career at Parkwood with 1057 points. Congratulations Molly and good luck!

Weddington’s Charles Pinner and Erin Addison will both continue their basketball careers at the college level. Pinner and Addison signed their letters of intent on April 11th.

Pinner, a 6’7 forward is headed to Randolph College. Pinner capped off his senior year by being named 3rd Team All-UCOOPS and All-SCC. Pinner averaged 9.2 ppg along with 7.4 rpg and 1.2 blocks per game for Coach Gary Ellington and the Warriors. Pinner played in only two games after suffering a broken back his junior year. Congrats Charles!!!

Addison, a 5’5 guard signed with Washington and Lee University. Addison rounded out her Warrior career by being named All-UCHOOPS 1st Team and All-SCC. Erin finished 2nd in Union Co. scoring with a 17.6 average as a senior. Addison also grabbed 6.2 rebounds and dished out 3.0 assists per game. Addison also averaged 3.5 steals per game for Coach Brown and the Warriors. Addison was named 2nd Team All-UCHOOPS as a junior and sophomore as well as being named New Comer of the Year her freshman year. Erin finished her 4-year career at Weddington with 1303 career points. Congrats Erin!

Union Academy's Briana Pressley finished 4th in Union Co. after scoring 423 points as a senior Birana was named Pac-7 Player of the Year and 1st Team All-UnionCountyHoops. Pressley finishesher Cardinal career with 1259 career points.

Forest Hills' junior Jai Rorie helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the State Title while being name MVP of the 2A State Championship game. Rorie scored 464 points as a junior and now has scored 1145 points with his senior year left to add to his total.

Parkwood's Molly Setliff capped off a outstanding senior year by scoring 446 points and being named UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year and SCC Player of the Year. Molly averaged 17.2 ppg good enough for 3rd in Union Co. Setliff finishes her career at Parkwood with 1057 points scored.

Tyson finished his 4 years at Piedmont as the all-time leading scorer in Union Co. history with 2131 points. For the second year in a row Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson was named to the 2017-18 All-District 1st Team. Tyson, a senior who is headed to Clemson led Union Co. in scoring with a 27.0 scoring average and rebounding grabbing 10.3 rebounds a game. Tyson became the all-time leading scorer in Uion Co. history and is the lone member of the 2000-point club. Tyson led Piedmont to the 1st round of the playoffs.

Forest Hills’ junior Nas Tyson was named to the 2017-18 All-District 2nd team. Tyson was 3rd in Union Co. with a 17.2 scoring average along with 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 asists per game. Tyson led Union Co. in steals with a 2.8 average. Tyson helped to led Forest Hills to the 2A State Title.

Forest Hills junior Jai Rorie and Monroe sophomore Salen Streater were named to the 3rd Team All-District. Rorie finished 3rd in scoring in Union Co. with a 14.5 average for the Yellow Jackets. Rorie helped to led Forest Hills to the 2A State Title and was named MVP of the State Champhionship game after scoring 22 points. Streater was 2nd in Union Co. in scoring with a 17.3 average and will look to build on his outstanding sophomore season.

Parkwood's Molly Setliff was named to the All-District 2nd Team. Setliff finished 3rd in Union Co. with a 17.6 ppg for the Rebels. Setliff led Union Co. in steals with 4.7 swipes per game along with 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Setliff was named SCC Player of the Year and 1st-Team All-SCC.

Sun Valley’s Amanda Cherry and Union Academy's Briana Pressley were named to the All-District 3rd team. Cherry led Union Co. in scoring with a 18.9 per game average along with 2.6 assits and 2.5 steals per game. Amanda was named All-SCC. Pressley finised 4th in Union Co with a 16.9 ppg, 3.1 assits and 3.6 steals per game for the Cardinals and was Pac-7 Player of the Year.

Parkwood’s Girls head coach Brian Morris has stepped down. Morris finished this second year as the Rebels coach with a 22-5 record and qualified for the state 3A playoffs. Morris was 39-14 in two years at Parkwood. Morris was not a teacher at Parkwood and is employed outside UCPS. Morris replaced Kate Edwards. Morris came from Arborbrook Christian School and led the Falcons to a 26-4 record and the 2nd round of the CACAA Tournament in 2015-16. Morris was 56-18 overall at Arborbrook Christian. Pakrwood's Molly Setliff now in the 1000 point club. Setliff, a senior guard needed 7 points to heading into the matchup with Monroe to be the newest member of the 1000 point club. Setliff scored 21 in leading the Rebels to a win and now has 1014 points scored in her Rebel career. Setliff, who is averaging 17.0 ppg this season joins Weddington's Erin Addison and Union Academy's Briana Pressley as the newest members of the girls 1000 point club.

Sun Valley's Amanda Cherry is the Sun Valley Spartans all-time leading scorer after scoring 23 points in a 62-32 loss to Marvin Ridge. Cherry needed six points to set the Sun Valley record that was held by Amanda Leigh (1547 points). Cherry's career point total is now 1565 with two regular season games left.Cherry now sits 15th all time on the Union Co. scoring list and is five points away from 14th all-time

Forest Hills "sniper" Jai Rorie enteretd the 1000 point club during 84-57 win over East Montgomery. Rorie scored 20 points on his way to the the milestone. Currently Rorie has 1008 career points in his time at Forest Hills.

Piedmon'ts Hunter Tyson sits on top of the scorig mountain in Union Co. Tyson entered the Parkwood game needing just 12 points to set the the Union Co. scoring record for points scored in a career (1980). Tyson scored the 12 ponits and added 30 more points in the win to become the the record holder and the only member of the boys 2000 point club. The future Clemson Tiger has now 2011 career points is leading Union Co. with a 27.8 scoring aveage this season.

Weddington's Erin Addison joined the 1000 point club in a 60-50 win over Charlotte Catholic. Addison entered the SCC contest with Charlotte Catholic needing 18 points to join the eilite club and had that at halftime. Erin finished the night with 25 points to lead the Warriors. Addison, a four year starter at Weddington was named 2nd Team All-UCHoops as a junior and sophomore. Addison joins Warrior greats Stephanie Watts (2566), Jordan Alley (1587), Allie Cashion (1458), Remi Roberts (1015) and Sam Sebastian (1000) to score 1000 points in their Weddington career. Congrats Erin!

Union Academy's Briana Pressley entered the 1000 point club after dropping 16 points in a 78-72 win over Pine Lake Prep Birana finished the game with 1002 career points. Pressley led Union Co. in scoring as a junior and was named 1st Team All-UCHOOPS. Pressley was 3rd Team All-UCHOOPS as a sophomore after putting up 15.5 ppg. Congrats Briana!

Piedmont's Lauren Whitley will continue her education and basketblal career at Greensboro College. Whitley, a senior guard announced her intentions via her twitter account, "Excited & blessed to say that I am Verbally Committed to continue my academic & basketball career at Greensboro College 💚🏀". Laure a 5'9 guard played in 24 games as a junior and averaged 3.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg and 1.4 apg in helping the Piedmont Panthers to a 17-11 record and into the 3A State Playoffs. Whitley will be leaned on for more scoring as a senior for new Piemdont Coach Kasey Brooks. Whitley added her name to the Union Co. record book as a junior by blocking 10 shots in the 1st round SCC tournament win over Weddington. Whitley finished the game wtih 10 blocks/2 assists/5 points in the win. Congrats Lauren!

Hunter Tyson, a senior wing for the Piedmont men’s basketball team, committed to continue his education and basketball playing career at Clemson. The Tigers were one of the first teams to offer the 6-foot- 8, 190-pound wing a scholarship. Tyson was named 1st team All-UCHOOPS, Co- Southern Carolina Conference Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season as a junior and led Union Co. in scoring (25.4 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) and averaged 2.7 steals per game. He led Piedmont to the second round of the 3A state playoffs. In his final game of his junior season — a 73-70 loss to Freedom — he scored a Piedmont record and a career-high 44 points. The wing had offers from several other Division-I programs, including Michigan, Butler, Tennessee and Wake Forest, among others. Tyson was named 1st Team All-UCHOOPS as a sophomore and averaged 19.4 ppg and 7.9 rpg. received a UCHoops Special Mention as a freshman. Cograts Hunter!

The Sun Valley girls’ basketball head coach Jeremy Waldrup stepped down from the position this past May. He now has reconsidered and will remain the Sun Valley girls head coach for the 2017-18 season. Waldrup took over the Sun Valley girls program after serving as an assistant to boy’s coach Keith Mason. Waldrup, in three seasons at the helm was 44-36 with a SCC title and led the Spartans to the state playoffs every year. Sun Valley’s best season was the 2016-17 season, when the Spartans were 18-8 and won the SCC and Waldrup was named SCC Coach of the Year. Welcome back coach!

Monroe's Paul Rushing has signed with Tiffin Univeristy in Ohio. Rushing, 5'9 guard averaged 15.2 points per game and 2.4 assists per game as a senior. Paul was named 3rd Team All-UCHOOPs as a senior. As a junior Paul averaged 10.6 points per game and 1.6 assists per game. Rushing scored a career high 28 points in a 56-40 win over Parkwood. Forest Hills outstanding senior guard Tyrese Barber will continue his education and basketball career at Wingate. Forest Hills' coach Matt Sides announced the signing via his twitter account. "Tyrese Barbour signs to play basketball @WingateUniv and brings in tons of money on academic scholarships. So proud of this young man!" Barber was named 2nd Team All-UCHOOPS as a junior after averaging 11.1 points and4.5 assists per game while helping lead the Yellow Jackets to the 2A NC Final-Four as a sophomore and junior. Barber was named All-Rocky River as a junior. Congrats Tyrese!

Forest Hills annouced their new head basketball coach today via their facebook page. "Forest Hills High is pleased to announce Marc Richardson as the new head girls basketball coach for the upcoming 2017-2018 season. Richardson brings a great deal of experience in working with both men’s and women’s teams at the high school level. Richardson previously coached girls basketball at Cape Fear High School from 1995-2000. Cape Fear had an 0-24 record prior to hiring Richardson, and they finished the 1995-1996 season with a 12-10 record. In 2000 Richardson was hired as the head boys basketball coach at Anson High School, where he had similar success and led the team to a conference tournament championship and regular season conference championship. “We are extremely excited about the level of enthusiasm Coach Richardson will bring to the program,” Forest Hills Principal Dr. Kevin Plue said. “We feel confident that he has all of the tools and skills that will bring great energy, motivation and discipline to the court.” Richardson replaces Kelsey Anselmi after one season, going 4-18. The Central Academy Cougars will have Angela James at the helm to start the 2017 season. Mrs. James replaced Tony Byrum as head coach of the girl’s program. Byrum finished with a 4-44 record over the past two seasons. Kevin Allran has been the most successful when he led them to a 8-15 record in the 2014-15 season. James coached at Union Academy from 2011-2016 compiling a 23-61 record. James’ best season at Union Academy was the 2013-14 season when she led them to a 12-14 record and made the 1A state playoffs. James will be the fourth head coach in 5 season for the Cougars. James is the 3rd new coach in Union Co. following Aaron Brown at Weddington and Kasey Brooks at Piedmont. Good Luck Coach James!!
